Val Gardena - Gröden in the Unesco Dolomites
Where is Val Gardena/Gröden is located and why is it so popular?
Historically called „Forestum at Gredine“, the magnificent Val Gardena Gröden valley, set in the heart of the natural world heritage UNESCO the Dolomites, lays in the province of South Tyrol in Italy, a German speaking district close to the border to Austria, in the middle of the Italian Alps. The peculiarity of Val Gardena Gröden, which is composed by the three towns of Selva Val Gardena, Santa Cristina and Ortisei, is that it has his own language called ladin and its own culture, which is more than 2000 years old. This peculiarity led to a multilingual development of the valley and of its inhabitants and this is why the towns have multiple names: one in German, one in Italian and one in ladin. Locals used to grow up with the mentioned three languages and nowadays there is a high English speaking percentage.
